Accurate fabrication begins with knowing which conditions are ready to measure and which dimensions still depend on unfinished work.
Establish readiness.
Walls, floors, ceilings, openings, mechanical work, and adjacent finishes must be sufficiently complete to produce useful dimensions. Measuring a moving target creates false certainty.
Verify in field is not a plan until the person, condition, date, and consequence are defined.
Document the controlling conditions.
Dimensions need datums, photographs, sketches, date, location, and clear identification of remaining work. Conflicts between the field and approved documents must be resolved before release.
- Name the responsible verifier.
- Define which surfaces control measurement.
- Record out-of-square and out-of-level conditions.
- Tie release approval to documented information.
Use tolerance intentionally.
Fabrication should not assume a perfect building. Scribers, fillers, shadow lines, adjustable connections, and installation clearances must be designed around known variation rather than improvised on site.
